Stonechat

Habitat & Behaviour: Copyright Ben Hall, RSPB

The stonechat breeds on heath, moor and grassland in areas that have some dense scrub where a nest can be built.  Birds are frequently seen flicking their wings while perched on low bushes.

Identification & Voice:

In the spring, male stonechats are unmistakable with their black head, orange breast and white patches on the side of the neck.  The alarm call is the typical scolding ''chak, chak'' of a chat and sounds like two pebbles being crashed together.
