2014: The Golden Year

2014 marks 50 years since the designation of the Forest of Bowland as a National Landscape, making this a fantastic year to explore and enjoy this beautiful area.  Follow this link for an history of the designation.

Covering 803 square kilometres (300 sq miles) of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire, this distinctive landscape of high, open fells, steep-sided cloughs and rich, green lowlands was recognised as being amongst the finest in the country and given its official status on 10th February 1964.

Today, the National Landscape is managed by a partnership of public, private and voluntary organisations working together to protect and enhance the qualities which make the Forest of Bowland such a special place.  One of 46 National Landscape's in Britain, the designation helps to ensure that the distinctive character and natural beauty of this nationally important area are safeguarded and protected for all to enjoy.  Visit Landscapes for Life for further information.

Brock BluebellsDuring 2014 there will be lots of opportunities to help us mark this very special milestone and we do hope that you will be able to join us.

Plans for our Golden Anniversary include a special awards ceremony to recognise and celebrate the work of some of the many groups, businesses and individuals whose dedication, time and skills contribute to the Forest of Bowland's unique sense of place, its landscape, wildlife and communities – true Bowland Champions.

We have also produced a fantastic 2014 edition of our Discovery Guide, designed to help you make the very most of your time in the area. With everything from wildlife, walking routes and local food to arts, heritage and a great new children's writing competition, this really is a wonderful guide to the Forest of Bowland National Landscape during our anniversary year.

One of the easiest ways to get involved in the celebrations is by making the most of the National Landscape's Festival Bowland events programme.  This year's booklet features 50 key events, all of which will help residents and visitors to find out more about Bowland and its distinctive character.

And for those with a creative streak, we'll be working with Lancashire County Council and partners to continue the tradition of great art in Bowland.

So, whether you live here in the Forest of Bowland or are planning a visit during 2014, we do hope you'll use these pages to keep up to date with everything we have planned during this very special Forest of Bowland National Landscape Golden Anniversary year!
