Organised Activities, Events & SSSI Consents

Important information for event organisers and land managers

This page provides guidance for anyone planning organised, commercial or large‑scale activities within the Forest of Bowland National Landscape, including on Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).

Do I need consent?

You may need consent if you are planning:

  • A sponsored walk, run or fell race
  • A cycling or multi‑sport event
  • A commercial or ticketed activity
  • An organised group outdoor pursuit
  • Any activity taking place on SSSI land that could affect its special features

Owners and occupiers of SSSI land have legal responsibilities, and Natural England may need to give consent before an activity can take place.

Who applies for consent?

  • The landowner must apply, or
  • The event organiser, if they have written permission from the landowner to act on their behalf (this must be provided to Natural England)

Final consent is issued to the landowner in all cases.

The consent process (summary)

  1. Initial discussion
An informal conversation with a Natural England local adviser is strongly recommended before submitting a formal notice.
  2. Submit a formal notice
A written notice must be provided to Natural England describing:
    • Location
    • Timing
    • Type of activity
    • Potential impacts
  3. Assessment & decision
Natural England has up to four months to:
    • Grant consent
    • Grant consent with conditions
    • Refuse consent

Activities unlikely to damage the special features of an SSSI are usually consented.

Conditions, refusals & appeals

  • Conditions or time limits may be applied to protect sensitive features
  • If consent is refused, the activity must not legally proceed
  • Appeals can be made to the Secretary of State if you disagree with conditions or refusal

You can:
