Outdoor Learning

The Forest of Bowland National Landscape offers a wonderful resource for learning.

There are opportunities to explore science, geography and history by investigating wildlife, habitats, farming, food production and heritage; or you can gain inspiration from the landscape to bring maths, English, art, PHSE and other subjects to life.

Opportunities

Venues such as Beacon Fell Country Park and Gisburn Forest have parking and toilet facilities and can offer great bases for activities. For more information, contact them directly via the links above.

Several farms within the National Landscape also offer educational access visits for schools and other groups.  Some offer indoor shelter along with the chance to explore the farm environment.

Health & Safety

With any visit, schools and groups will need to make sure they follow the right procedures in order to make their visit as safe and enjoyable as possible. Your local authority Health & Safety team, or educational off-site visits team, should be able to offer advice with this, and with compiling any risk assessments.

Activity providers and education access farms should also have their own risk assessments and guidance, which they share with you before any visit.

It's important to remember that, although they can be fun and educational, farms can be a source of infections which can cause serious illness, so do make sure you follow advice on how to stay safe.

A useful source of information is the Code of Practice: Teachers guide found on the Access to Farms website.

The UK Health Security Agency have also produced a useful, short video about how to stay safe and well when visiting farms.
