Foodie Foray

22nd to 29th September 2019

The Foodie Foray is a celebration of local food and the distinctive local dishes found across the Forest of Bowland.
This week-long programme includes walks, foraging and feasting.

Whether you fancy finding out more about the local delicacies that thrive within our landscape, finding food for free amongst the hedgerows or tucking into a locally sourced feast, there’s an event for everyone.

EVENTS:

Sunday 22nd September

  • SEASONAL FORAGING & FEASTING

Time: 10.00 to 16.00
Location: Gisburn Forest
Cost: £35

Berries (Forest of Bowland AONB)Join us for a wild foraging walk around Gisburn Forest with expert Adrian Rose from North West Bushcraft.  Adrian will take you on a short walk (approx 3 miles) to seek out wild foraged foods such as fungi, medicinal plants & trees. 

We'll then take a short journey by car to Dale House Barn for a 3 course foraged feast put together by the talented Dominque Ashford, owner of Dale House Barn and B&B.

The menu will be finalised nearer to the date, but this is an example of what you can expect:

  • Homemade sour dough bread and wild fennel butter
  • Wood pigeon breast, chestnut pithivier, hawberry sauce
  • Haunch of venison, mashed potatoes, pickled Blackberries, boletus mushroom cream
  • Rosehip ice cream, pavlova and wood sorrel

Join Ribble Valley foraging expert Adrian Rose, as he guides you on a culinary quest to sample some of the best wild foods that the area has to offer. Adrian has been featured numerous times on Radio and Television talking about his passion for wild food foraging within the Ribble Valley and loves to share his knowledge in these fun and engaging walks.

Dominique is a classically trained chef who has worked at the Houses of Parliament, and with the Roux brothers and Aiden Byrne. She now runs Dalehouse Barn and B&B along with her partner Andrew. Between them they offer beautiful accommodation and a small menu of carefully selected local produce with an emphasis on game.

Monday 23rd September

  • GET INTO A PICKLE

Time: 18.30 to 20.30
Location: Barley
Cost: £5

Embrace the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness and explore the wonderful world of jam and preserves with Pendle Landscape Partnership Farming and Wildlife Officer Sarah Robinson. Pickling and preserves aficionado will supervise a practical workshop dedicated to making the autumn bounty last through the lean months of winter.

Wednesday 25th September

  • TEA & TONIC - A SEASONAL WILD MEDICINE FORAGE

Time: 18.OO to 21.00

Location: The Gathering Fields, Over Wyresdale

Cost: £12.50

Enjoy a short walk around the beautiful gardens at the Gathering Fields to collect seasonal, edible fruits or plants for a fresh tea to enjoy on the evening.  With Helen's expertise and guidance you'll then make your own tonic (elixir) to take home.

Please bring along 1 x Jam Jar + one small bottle of Brandy, Vodka or Apple Cider Vinegar.

Adrian has been featured numerous times on Radio and Television talking about his passion for wild food foraging within the Ribble Valley and loves to share his knowledge in these fun and engaging walks suitable for all ages.

Friday 27th, Saturday 28th and Sunday 29th September

  • FORAGING AND DISTILLING DAYS (NOW FULLY BOOKED)

Goosnargh Gin Stills

Time: 9am to 4pm

Location: Whitechapel

Cost: £95

Join us for this truly immersive gin experience at the home of Goosnargh Gin. In the morning we will meet with expert forager Ade Rose in our beautiful surroundings, to identify and collect a range of seasonal local botanicals. It’s then back to the distillery to enjoy a light lunch, before finding out more about gin, recipe development and the distillation process. For the remainder of the day you’ll take charge of one of our mini stills to produce a 500ml bottle of your own botanical blend of gin to take home with you. Each day will accommodate 6 people, to ensure a personal hands-on experience throughout.

Saturday 28th September

  • SABDEN ANTIQUES CENTRE  FARM AND FIELD WALK

Time: 11.00 to 16.00
Location: Sabden (details of meeting point will be sent out after booking)
Cost: £7.95 (includes afternoon tea) 

(Doggie afternoon tea also available at £7.95 - please request when booking).

Discover the rolling pastureland between Sabden and the Pendle Summit Plateau, where happy cows graze contentedly and produce nutritious whole milk which is then bottled on the farm at the Milking Parlour. Enjoy an 8km guided walk followed by a hearty afternoon tea at the popular Sanwitches café at the Antiques Centre, ending the day with a visit to the Milking Parlour and a short talk by the Gills.

Dogs welcome (and doggie afternoon tea is also available, please ask about this when booking your place).  Please bring sturdy footwear and waterproofs.

Sunday 29th September

  • HERBAL MEDICINE FORAGE AND FINE DINING ESCAPE

Time: 12.30 to 16.00
Location: Hurst Green
Cost: £12.50 (event only) - Dinner, Bed & Breakfast option from £125 for two

Learn about some of the edible and medicinal plants growing in the local area with Danielle Kay Medical Herbalist.  Danielle will lead you on a gentle route around Hurst Green, starting from the Shireburn Arms.  Get closer to nature, discover the wonder of the weeds and give your tastebuds a treat with a taste of the wild as Danielle demonstrates how to use foraged fruits to prepare syrups & elixir. 

Make a night of it by staying over at The Shireburn Arms and enjoying a seasonal dinner in this cosy inn. Dog friendly rooms available.

Danielle Kay is a keen forager who loves introducing people to the medicinal and edible qualities of local wild 'weeds'.  She has led lots of walks, workshops and talks on natural health and wellbeing and can often be found in amongst the hedgerows picking the latest seasonal treats.  

Located in the picturesque village of Hurst Green, The Shireburn Arms is a 17th Century hostelry offering stunning views, beautiful accommodation and locally produced food.
