May is the first month in Bowland when things turn green, as leaves emerge on the trees and hedgerows and birds are nesting. This is the month to see wonderful woodlands carpeted in bluebells with special species such as Pied Flycatchers and Redstarts singing from the trees above.  Also, look out for Dotterel on Pendle Hill, one of the most important spring passage sites in England for this attractive mountaintop dwelling wading bird.

Also look out for:

• Bats in the evening along the rivers, under bridges and in woodlands.
• Hawthorn with its sweetly scented flowers.
• Orange Tip butterflies on sunny verges and woodland edges.
