This exciting free event is aimed at organisations, businesses and individuals delivering Access for All opportunities, who would like to share best practice and engage in inclusive activities in an outdoor setting.

On the second day, we will be extending opportunities for the public (via invitation), and experiencing a range of inclusive, outdoor activities.  These will include: forest bathing, bushcraft, yoga, a navigation workshop, nature connection with sound, an alpaca experience and a foraging & wellbeing wander.

A variety of all-terrain wheelchair providers will be attending and will be bringing a wide range of vehicles for delegates to try. These include: TGA, TerrainHopper, Tramper, Mountain Trike and Paratreker.

We are thrilled to provide a platform for meaningful connections and shared experiences in a welcoming and inclusive environment and we invite any relevant organisations to find out more and secure a free place at: www.forestofbowland.com/access-all-event

Sarah Dornan, Countyside Access Officer for the Forest of Bowland National Landscape said:

“It’s about providing opportunities for as many people as possible in the outdoors, and events like this provide a wonderful opportunity for organisations and businesses to come together and share experiences and best practice.  We are delighted to showcase what is on offer in Bowland and that we can offer this event to people for free, which is being made possible via DEFRA Accessibility Funding'.

In the last 6 months, the Forest of Bowland National Landscape has partnered with Access the Dales to explore making the inaccessible accessible and to break down the barriers that prevent people living with disabilities enjoying the great outdoors, either independently or with their friends and family. There are several hub locations in the National Landscape where all-terrain wheelchairs are free to hire and can be used along designated trails – including Dunsop Bridge,  Whitewell,  Gisburn Forest Hub and Sabden.  For further information visit: www.forestofbowland.com/access-bowland

7th April 2024

Bowland Bus - image by Mark SutcliffeA new bus service connecting villages across the Ribble Valley, Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales enters service on April 8, 2024.

Operated by 21 Transport, the new Service 11 Bus is jointly funded by Lancashire County Council, Ribble Valley Borough Council and North Yorkshire Council, providing a welcome boost to public transport to the rural communities on both sides of the Lancashire-Yorkshire Border.

Service 11 buses will operate Monday to Saturday, running every two hours between Clitheroe Interchange and Horton in Ribblesdale – connecting with rail services at either end of the route.

As well as providing vital links to villages along the route, the new service will deliver a boost for sustainable tourism, opening up car-free access to some of the most popular visitor attractions and walking routes in Lancashire and Yorkshire.

Stopping at villages like Dunsop Bridge, Slaidburn and Newton, the route also incorporates Clitheroe and Settle. With single fares capped at £2, the new bus service will become the most cost-effective way to visit the tourist attractions of the Forest of Bowland, Yorkshire Dales and Ribble Valley.

Forest of Bowland National Landscape sustainable tourism officer Hetty Byrne said:’ This is great news for residents and tourists who want to explore the amazing landscapes of the Ribble Valley, Forest of Bowland and Yorkshire Dales.

“The Forest of Bowland National Landscape straddles both counties and this new bus service will be a significant boost for sustainable tourism across the beautiful Lancashire-Yorkshire border country.

“We launched our Eco Escapes initiative to promote sustainable travel and tourism across the Forest of Bowland and the new bus will significantly expand the opportunities for car-free tourism in the National Landscape."

FOREST OF BOWLAND SET TO SPARKLE IN FEBRUARY

8th January 2024

Image by Stephen AdairThe Forest of Bowland National Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) celebrates its 60th anniversary this year and is marking the occasion with a brand-new photography exhibition alongside its annual Dark Skies Festival.

Covering 800 square kilometres (300 sq miles) of rural Lancashire and North Yorkshire, Bowland's distinctive landscape of high open fells, rich green lowlands and steep, wooded cloughs was recognised as being amongst the finest in the country and given its official status on 10th February 1964.

These qualities are encapsulated in Diamonds in the Landscape; a special exhibition of 30 images, all of which were chosen from entries submitted to the Forest of Bowland photography competition during autumn 2023.

From far-reaching moorland vistas and stunning wildlife shots to majestic woodlands and atmospheric pastoral scenes, the talented photographers have perfectly captured the variety and beauty of the Bowland landscape.

The exhibition will open at Clitheroe Castle Museum on the 10th of February and run until the 28th of April before moving to The Folly in Settle.

Clitheroe Castle Museum Manager, Claire Sutton, said:

Gisburn Forest by Robert Ince

From our vantage point above the town, we have fantastic views into the Forest of Bowland, both north and south. This is a place where you can feel connected to the countryside right on the doorstep, so we're very pleased to host the National Landscape's 60th anniversary exhibition in our Steward's Gallery this spring.

Hetty Byrne, Sustainable Tourism Officer with the Forest of Bowland National Landscape said:

This is a milestone year for us, and Clitheroe is a key gateway into the Forest of Bowland, so we're very excited to begin our new exhibition tour at the castle museum.  We hope the wonderful photos shared by competition entrants will inspire both residents and visitors to create some of their very own "diamond" Bowland moments over the coming year.

Saturday 10th February also sees the start of the annual Bowland Dark Skies Festival. With stargazing, photography tips, family crafts and a dark-skies inspired food tour on the menu this year, this week-long programme offers a touch of late winter sparkle and half-term fun. Events will be taking place both online and at venues across the National Landscape.

Opening times for Clitheroe Castle Museum are available at: www.lancashire.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/museums/clitheroe-castle-museum/, by calling 01200 424568 or by emailing clitheroecastle@lancashire.gov.uk
